3  New Cars / Sportscar / Lotus Exige Scura Special Edition Goes to Tokyo on: November 29, 2009, 05:50:44 PM
The Lotus Exige Scura or the Exige Stealth Special Edition (for the Japanese) is being readied for a Tokyo debut and as per the company officials it will be a stunning vehicle which will offer an adrenaline fueled experience — something we can’t fight with. The name ‘Scura’ means dark in Italian, and it’s not hard to understand why the name was chosen as it has been finished with a matte black paint with high gloss ‘Phantom Black’ triple stripes.

The Exige Scura is a little monster with a dynamic design that will be built in a limited edition of only 35 units which will be sold across the world so you can be rest assured of the exclusivity factor. Under the hood will be a supercharged 1.8-litre engine with VVTL-I which sports 260hp and 236Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. The engine would be assisted by a 6-speed manual gearbox helping the Exige Scura to reach 100km/h in 4.1 seconds on its way to a max speed of 245km/h.

As far as the economy is concerned the Scura furnishes a combined fuel consumption figure of 8.5 litres per 100km
4  New Cars / Sportscar / McLaren MP4-12C Supercar Delayed for US Debut on: November 29, 2009, 05:49:28 PM
Back in September we broke it that McLaren is working on a new supercar dubbed MP4-12C to be the successor of the McLaren F1, but we just caught wind that there are issues with actually bringing it to US dealer shops. Competing with the likes of Porsche 911 Turbo or the Ferrari 456 Italia, which already have a good presence in the US, the new MP4-12C was supposed to make its public debut at the LA Show in December, but the company pulled out of that one leaving us drooling over the  powerful 3.8-litre twin turbo that outputs around 608hp and 600 Nm of torque. A more probable release date is expected to be announced for mid-2010. [via insideline]

10  New Cars / Sportscar / 911 Sport Classic on: September 03, 2009, 08:52:28 PM
Porsche has unveiled its special edition 911 Sport Classic in the lead up to its official debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Porsche is bringing back the tradition of exclusive series built in very small numbers with the 911 Sport Classic which will be offered in a production run limited to just 250 cars worldwide.

The bespoke 911 has been developed over a period of three years by Porsche Exclusive, the company’s Specialist Department which creates the most outstanding personalised versions of Porsche cars. The 911 Sport Classic boasts charismatic styling cues inherited from previous generation Porsche’s such as the ‘ducktail’ rear spoiler reminiscent of that made famous by the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 and iconic ‘Fuchs-style’ design of the special custom-made alloy wheels.

Together with these design enhancements the Sport Classic also features a more powerful engine, unique exterior with new front and rear styling, a new centre section in the roof, new side sills, and new design of front and rear lights. The 3.8-litre six-cylinder boxer engine now pumps out 300kW thanks to modified cylinder heads, a new intake system and new engine management, contributing to the 17kW boost

11  Custom Cars / New & Updated Modified Cars / Focus RS-chaser from ABT on: July 15, 2009, 08:38:39 PM
As much as the GTI moniker denotes VW hot hatch performance, prefixing ABT to it adds even more dynamic focus.

From his Kempten base, Hans-Juergen Abt’s technicians have prepared a well rounded performance and aesthetic upgrade for the sixth generation Golf GTI, encompassing engine, chassis and styling modifications.

The factory specification GTI’s bland rear styling is cured to an extent with a new rear spoiler and apron treatment, housing a split, vertically stacked quad exhaust system.

Around the front of the ABT GTI you’ll notice a radically redesigned grille and lip-spoiler, with vertically arranged daytime running lights embellishing a new front apron.

Big power boost

As neat as the new styling bits are, any ABT badged VW product needs dynamic validity and the ABT GTI offers a two stage engine power upgrade to flesh out performance credentials.

The mellower ABT POWER kit is a simple ECU remap and performance exhaust set-up, which manages to bump the GTI’s 2.0 TSI output from 154- to 191kW, indicative of the very healthy latent power extraction margin VW has engineering into this engine.

For customers who wish to go Ford RS baiting, there is the POWER S tuning option.

The full house POWER S tuning package has ABT’s technicians coupling a new turbocharger to the 2.0 TSI engine, boosting power to 221kW and rounding off the 0-100km/h acceleration time to around six seconds.

Balancing the dynamic handling and deceleration demands of these increased power figures are both suspension and brake upgrades.

ABT's GTI sports a 30mm ride height reduction thanks to recalibrated ABT springs at all four wheel corners (which should sharpen handling responses slightly), and stops more resolutely courtesy of significantly larger 345mm diameter brake discs.

ABT’s interior upgrades are slightly questionable in taste, with the red contrast accents and stitching coming off as a decidedly haphazard exercise in cabin embellishment.
12  New Cars / Sportscar / Audi Teases with A5 Sportback on: July 15, 2009, 07:43:57 PM
The drive to plug more niche markets gains ground with the latest revelation being Audi's A5 Sportback concept. It will be shown at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

While the third member of the A5 model range's styling is rather odd, Audi describes it as a "milestone in car design" and something that is "as elegant as a coupe, comfortable as a sedan and practical as an avant".

According to the manufacturer, that has released just a teaser image and sketch of the car, the five-door A5 Sportback (which eschews the classic two-door arrangement seen on the Coupe and Cabriolet models) has an elongated profile with a large hatchback dominating the rear. A spoiler lip and diffuser insert provide athletic appeal.

The coupe-like roofline tapers toward the rear of the car and is lower than the A4 sedan by 36mm. Despite this, Audi claims passengers at the rear will enjoy head- and legroom comparable to that seen on the A4. A5 Sportback seats four occupants only, though.

Its interesting styling and large hatch also ensure a load area of 480 l that swells to 980 l with the rear seats folded down. Nearly equal to the A4 Avant, the manufacturer says.

In Europe, the A5 Sportback will be offered with a range of EU5-compliant petrol and turbodiesel engines. These include the familiar 2.0 TFSI and 3.2-litre V6 units as well as the 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI and 176-kW three-litre V6 TDI.

The A5 Sportback will feature a new ESP system with electronic differential lock on the front axles for better steering response.

The new car will also be equipped with Audi's drive select system that allows the driver to choose between different modes influencing the throttle response, shift points on the S tronic and multitronic transmissions and tightens the servotronic steering.

The production version of the A5 Sportback is expected to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2010.
13  New Cars / Sportscar / Peugeot Sportscar Edges Closer on: July 15, 2009, 07:37:53 PM
Peugeot pulls the covers off its new sports car at the Frankfurt show, two years after wowing crowds with the 308 RCZ concept.

Along with releasing a host of teaser images of the new sports car, Peugeot also revealed the car's official name.

Called RCZ, this will be the first Peugeot to not use the usual zero or double zero numbering system.

One of the key considerations when transforming the concept into a viable production vehicle was to keep as much of the original styling as possible, the manufacturer said.

Peugeot sees this 2+2 Coupe occupying an exclusive spot in the product range. It will likely be powered  by the range-topping petrol and turbodiesel engines in the Peugeot stable.

More details will be revealed when the car debuts at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The RCZ will be sold in certain markets from early 2010.
